Your status in Gibraltar Many people come to Spain thinking that if it doesn't work then they can go to Gibraltar and be repatriated or, because Gibraltar is 'British', then they are entitled to benefits and schooling. How wrong can these people be? Although Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory it is not easy to find work or to live there. Living there is very expensive with many rental properties and house prices on a par with London and income tax on earnings is higher than in the UK. Non-Gibraltarian residents are not entitled to free health care unless you can prove that you are staying in Gib for a holiday. Children of non-residents are not entitled to free education - you must have a residence in Gibraltar and be paying tax and social security. Lots of people make the mistake of thinking that if they work in Gibraltar and live in Spain then their children can enter into schooling in Gibraltar - this is not the case. Gibraltar has no legal requirement to take in British citizens who run into trouble whilst living in Spain and neither do they have any obligation to repatriate any British citizen who turns up in Gibraltar seeking help. If you need help your best option is to contact the British Emabassy in Spain and they will assist you the best they can.
