Forest Fires in Spain

Forest fires in Spain pose a big threat to the countryside and the environment, with most fires in Spain being caused by people being careless. Lots of these fires could easily be avoided.

One of the main causes of forest fires in Spain are drivers throwing cigarette ends out of car windows. This has resulted in teh creation of a 4 point penalty on your licence if you are seen  throwing a lit cigarette from your vehicle.

Statistics show that 95% of fires are caused by human error, with the other 5% being caused by natural events. Careless handling of cigarettes and campfires, legal fires not being monitored correctly or efficiently and arson are all reasons why forest fires can and have been started.

Spain and Portugal have the highest incident of forest fires in comparison to the rest of Europe.

In 2005 more than 21,000 forest fires were recorded and in 2008 there have been reports of huge fires such as one close to the town of Zuera where over 200,000 hectares of pine forest and scrubland were destroyed. It also resulted in the evacuation of the nearby village of Castejon de Valdejasa and required 300 firefighters, 16 planes and helicopters being involved in the fight to put the fire out.

During the summer months in most areas of Spain it is illegal to light fires outdoors. No burning of rubbish or barbecuing in public places is allowed unless they are designated areas. (Check with your local townhall as to the laws for your area).

When lighting a bbq at home be aware of where you place the bbq - keep it away from dry scrubland that may be on or around your property. The Spanish tend to have 'summer kitchens' outside with concrete bbqs built inside them. Thy can contain sinks and in many cases hobs too. This is a great idea, as in summer a lot of your eating will take place outside.
